For over the past two centuries, the bicycle continues to be a ubiquitous means of personal transport spawning many different variations. If you grew up in the 1980s, surely the sight of a bicycle with a front basket conjures up nostalgic memories of the E.T. movie bike chase with Elliot flying past the moon with E.T. himself sitting in the basket. (By the way, did you know that the manufacturer of the iconic BMX bicycle in the scene was actually a Japanese company called Kuwahara?)

Beyond nostalgia though, bicycles with front baskets are commonly used in Japan today. We call them ‘mamachari’ (which is a combination of mother and a colloquial term for bicycles). These baskets come in handy for groceries and running errands of all sorts.

Though we hardly ever use metal in our items, this particular miniature features movable, golden pedals that turn for real. Though the wheels remain stationary, notice the symmetrical evenness of the bicycle spokes, which are all hand-drawn. The basket mimics wicker, which is actually sturdy enough to carry extremely small cargo (if you happen to be in playful mood). The leather seat has exactly the same texture that you would expect from a good quality bicycle. Each handmade item uses 100% cowhide leather.
